coupon cabin
New Delhi, November 13 IT was one road that stood between chaos and order at the Delhi airport during the fog season last year. This year, that road has been crossed.
Taking lessons from last year's fog chaos at IGI's domestic terminal, DIAL, the joint-venture company modernising the airport, has upgraded its fog cabins as an extension to the actual departure terminal. These are unlike last year's cabins, situated across the road that came a cropper since not many passengers were willing to cross the road, DIAL's corporate communications official Arun Arora said.
The space used by the fog cabins is on a lane that was often used to illegally park vehicles outside the departure terminal. DIAL officials said the cabins are larger this year and will have flight information display and TV screens. Apart from the better location, officials said stress has been put on aesthetics, too. "This seems like an extension of the terminal, so we have tried to give it (cabin) a more sophisticated look," an official said.
The company is also working on a single, standardised food coupon for all food outlets in and outside the terminal, Arora said. This comes following a Civil Aviation ministry directive that says passengers need to be served free food in case of fog delays.
If the airlines do not provide food, it then becomes DIAL's responsibility.
The company is in the process of finding caterers for the fog season. "We have spoken to airlines and offered providing food within the fog cabins," he said.
As for parking, officials said two additional parking spaces will be made for the fog season — they will come free. Two new buses have also started free shuttle service between the parking lots and the domestic terminal.
According to the Meteorological department, the fog period is likely to last from December 8 to February 15 next year. But it is also a packed winter schedule, with the Civil Aviation ministry estimating 28 flights will move per hour this winter. All airlines have also been advised to operate during the Red Eye period (midnight to 5 am).
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued fresh guidelines on Wednesday, saying the Met department has to inform Air Traffic Control as and when Runway Visibility Range drops to 800 metres or less; Low visibility procedures are to start at this point.
ATC are to give priority to CAT-II and CAT-III A/B pilots at this phase.
Ministry looking at another airport in city
Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel today said the ministry is looking at ways to build another airport in or around Delhi. The issue has been in discussion for some time now as a major decongestion measure to take pressure off IGI. But as per agreement between the ministry and the joint venture company now involved in upgrading IGI, no competing airport can be built within 150 kilometres.
Speaking at the Economic Editors Conference here, Patel said, "Some way has to be found out for another airport in Delhi. A government consensus will finally decide how we go about it. The ministry feels so and has moved a proposal which, hopefully, the Cabinet will soon look at." — ENS
