The end of the affair
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, 54, and TV news reporter Mirthala Salinas have ended their romantic relationship, two sources said Friday. Months after revelations about the affair damaged the mayor's political standing and devastated Salinas' broadcasting career, the two sources said the relationship disintegrated weeks ago. Mirthala Salinas (born October 27, 1970) was an anchor and reporter for U.S. Spanish language television channel KVEA-TV in Los Angeles. In August of 2007, she was suspended from her job for two months due to a conflict of interest scandal as a result of sleeping with the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, while at the same time reporting on the mayor's activities. Salinas also had many previous romantic relationships with other well known Los Angeles based California politicians, including Speaker of the California Assembly Fabian Nunez, a close friend and ally of LA's Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa [1] She moved on to become an anchor and reporter for U.S. Spanish language television channel KVEA-TV (also known as Telemundo 52) in Los Angeles.
[edit] Scandal
In early June, the mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, separated from his wife of 20 years, Corina, who filed for divorce a couple of days later. LA blogger Luke Ford (lukeford.net)had already broken the story that the mayor was not wearing his wedding ring any longer and the mainstream media was given denials by the mayor. According to ERSNews.com "The Enterprise Report" Salinas was well known in the Telemundo newsroom and by senior NBC/Telemundo management for having romantic relationships notable politicians for years [2] Coincidentally, she was the anchor who read the report of Villaraigosa's separation from his wife on the Telemundo 52 news broadcast.
Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa confirmed he was in a romantic relationship with Salinas in early July 2007. The story first broke on the LA based blog site Lukeford.net and then on July 3, 2007 when the Los Angeles Daily News reported on the affair. [3] Salinas later issued her own public statements shortly after the scandal erupted. According to the statements which were posted on Telemundo 52's sister station KNBC (also known as NBC4), the newscaster asked for privacy for herself and the mayor even though they were public figures, and that after all the facts were anaylized she was confident it would be determined that she conducted herself in an appropriate manner. Her claims turned out to be false.
On July 5, 2007, she was placed on paid leave by her employer while it conducted an internal investigation into whether she breached journalistic ethics. In late July 2007, some noted that Salinas' parent employer, NBC Universal, which was conducting the review of her reporting on the mayor in light of the news of the affair, was also campaigning with the city of Los Angeles for approval of a $3 billion, 20-year development plan for which they will need Villaraigosa's assistance. Some called this a conflict of interest, and news sites like ERSNews.com reported extensively on the ethical and journalistic conflicts her action created [4]
Salinas has also had romantic relationships with other Los Angeles politicians, including Former City Council President and current state Senator Alex Padilla.[5] [6]. Mayor Villaraigosa was the best man at Fabian Nunez's second wedding to his current wife.
On August 3, 2007 after a three-week internal investigation by executives at Telemundo and parent company NBC Universal, Telemundo suspended Salinas from her job for two months for violating conflict-of-interest policies as a result of ethics violations. According to Telemundo President Don Browne, Salinas was given the role of temporary news anchor in April of 2007 and had read lead-ins and other materials involving stories on the mayor and politics. Browne said in a statement, "this decision conflicted with our guidelines and with management's prior decision." Browne went on to say "Her reading of copy during newscasts on June 8 and June 11 regarding the mayor's separation from his wife was a flagrant violation of these guidelines. The failure to respond appropriately in the following weeks further compounded these errors." Three immediate supervisors were also disciplined. Telemundo 52 News Director Al Corral was suspended for 2 months without pay. Telemundo 52 President and General Manager Manuel Abud was reassigned from his position, according to the network. And President of the Telemundo Television Stations Division, Ibra Morales, was reprimanded, according to the network.
Mayor Villaraigosa issued a statement on the day Telemundo announced its disciplinary actions, saying, "I am deeply sorry that I have let so many people down, especially my family. Now that Telemundo's internal review has reached a conclusion, it is my hope that we can all move forward."
Following her two-month unpaid suspension, Salinas was reassigned to Telemundo's Riverside office but failed to report for duty. [7]
Station executives had expected Salinas to report to KVEA's Inland Empire bureau Monday morning, October 1st. KVEA dispatched its communications director to the Riverside office to handle an expected onslaught of news crews covering her return.
Several crews did appear, including those from sister station KNBC-TV Channel 4 and KVEA. They waited outside the bureau to capture footage of Salinas but left empty-handed.
Salinas was unhappy over her reassignment to Riverside, a factor that contributed to her decision not to show, according to a source familiar with the situation who would only speak anonymously. But KVEA felt the Riverside alternative was the best way out of an awkward ethics dilemma for the station, whose credibility was damaged by the romantic relationship.
"Telemundo and Mirtha Salinas have mutually agreed to end our employment relationship effective Oct. 1," station spokesman Victor M. Franco said.
Ms. Salinas made no public comment.
Villaraigosa declined to speak about her departure from Telemundo. "I don't have any knowledge about that," he said in an interview. "I just couldn't tell you anything. I wouldn't have any information." The two are still seeing one another, according to a source familiar with their relationship.

Mayoral 'relationship'
"They broke up earlier in the fall. They've both moved on. And Antonio is focused on his relationships with his kids," said one person who said he learned about the breakup in October.
The other source -- who described himself as a longtime friend of Villaraigosa's -- said the relationship ended two or possibly three months ago.
"I think it was a tough summer. I think it was hard on his family. And I think he's trying hard to get past everything that was that summer," the friend said.
Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the matter.
Salinas did not respond to requests for comment. Lisa Cohen, who briefly served as a spokeswoman for the anchor last summer, said earlier this week that she no longer represents the former Telemundo employee.
Deputy Mayor Sean Clegg said Friday that the mayor has already "fully addressed" the issues surrounding the end of his marriage.
Villaraigosa and his wife, Corina Villaraigosa, separated in June, weeks before he confirmed that he was romantically involved with Salinas. From the moment it became public, the affair between the mayor and the rising media star had a largely harmful effect on both parties.
Villaraigosa, whose handling of education reform, immigration and public safety were subjects of Salinas' reporting, was dogged by questions about whether his extramarital relationship had distracted him from his policy duties -- and whether he had provided any inside information to the reporter.
Salinas was one of a handful of employees at Telemundo who were disciplined because of the affair.
A rising star in Spanish-language television news, Salinas read on the air the news of Villaraigosa's marital breakup on June 8 without disclosing that she had been romantically involved with the mayor for several months.
Salinas received a two-month suspension for her handling of the situation.
At the end of that suspension, she was reassigned from her post as temporary anchor to a Telemundo bureau in Riverside County.
Instead of returning to her job, she quit.
Asked in September why Salinas didn't show up for work, Villaraigosa said at the time: "I don't have any knowledge about that. I just couldn't tell you anything. I wouldn't have any information."
Revelations about the affair damaged the mayor's credibility in the eyes of some voters, particularly women, said Jaime Regalado, who heads the Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs at Cal State Los Angeles.
With several of his news conferences dominated by questions about the affair, the mayor kept a relatively low profile for two months, staying out of the spotlight as the state Legislature raided $336 million in transportation funds from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Regalado said.
"I think he was hurt by it politically. I don't think there's any question about that," he said.
The affair even raised questions about the mayor's name. "Villaraigosa" is a merger of his name, Antonio Villar, and his wife's maiden name, Corina Raigosa. Although the mayor's wife filed divorce papers in June, Villaraigosa said he would not change his name back.
Villaraigosa has sought to regain his political footing since Labor Day, introducing into his speeches the notion that he has made mistakes but will continue to work hard for the city. That theme was echoed, to some degree, in an e-mail sent Friday by his top spokesman.
"The mayor has repeatedly expressed his profound regret and apologized," wrote Clegg, the deputy mayor.
"He is focused on doing the job people hired him to do: leading the city forward on the tough issues of public safety, traffic and school reform."
Despite all the publicity the relationship garnered, Villaraigosa and Salinas were rarely seen in public once the affair was known. Most prominently, they were caught on video in August shopping for shoes together at a mall -- images that were broadcast on the celebrity gossip website TMZ.com.
In the video, the mayor greeted the shopper who taped him using his camera phone. Salinas moved out of the way to avoid being seen.
