how to set a table

BULLDOG WOMEN WILL SET THE TABLE FOR MINNESOTA STATE FRIDAY NIGHT

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 4:37 PM

Freshman Iya Gavrilova ranks second in scoring for the Bulldogs with 12 total points in 12 games heading into Friday's contest with Minnesota State.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team will host Minnesota State University, Mankato this Friday and Saturday at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. The puck will drop on the Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown at 7:07 p.m. both nights.

THE SERIES: UMD holds a commanding lead over Minnesota State in the all-time series with a 27-3-3 record against the Mavericks. The Bulldogs are an impressive 15-1-1 when hosting MSU at the DECC.

UMD's one and only program loss at home came last season when the Mavericks knocked the Bulldogs off their home ice advantage with a 5-3 win on Nov. 18, 2006 after UMD tied MSU for the first time in Duluth 5-5 the night before. That series not only marked the first loss and tie for the Bulldogs in the DECC against the Mavericks, but it was also the first time since the 2003-3004 season that UMD did not skate out of a Bulldog-Maverick series with a win.

UMD last swept MSU in its first conference meeting last fall, beating the Mavericks in Mankato 3-1 and 6-1 on Oct. 6-7 to start the 2006-2007 campaign.

LAST WEEK: The WCHA-leading Bulldogs split last weekend with No. 6 Minnesota at the DECC, with a decisive 5-0 win Saturday afternoon and then a 3-0 stumble Sunday. Sophomore goaltending ace Kim Martin stood between the pipes for 80 saves on the weekend. Eight Bulldogs recorded a point in Saturday's scoring spree, including a goal and two assists by UMD tally leader Saara Tuominen, who leads the Bulldogs with 17 points.

The sixth-place Mavericks enjoyed a weekend off from on-ice action after sweeping No. 10 Ohio State two weeks ago 3-2 and 8-3 for the first time in MSU history.

THE COACHES: Shannon Miller, who currently is the only coach in the WCHA to have racked-up 208 wins, is in her ninth season behind the Bulldog bench.

As the only head coach UMD has ever employed, Miller has amassed an impressive overall record of 208-60-25 and has led the Bulldogs to six NCAA playoff appearances and three straight NCAA Championship titles (2001, 2002 and 2003). She has led UMD into four NCAA Frozen Four berths, including the 2007 NCAA Championship game. No other hockey program in the country has won three consecutive NCAA titles.

For her efforts, Miller was named the 2000 and 2003 Western Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year and the 2003 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Women's Division I Coach of the Year. Along with the incredible NCAA runs, her Bulldogs have captured two WCHA regular season titles (2000 and 2003) and three WCHA playoff titles (2000, 2001 and 2003).

During Miller's time at the Bulldog helm, UMD has produced eight first-team All-Americans, 11 Patty Kazmaier Award Finalists, two WCHA Players of the Year, three WCHA Student-Athletes of the year and one CoSIDA Academic All-American.

The Mavericks are lead by seventh-year head coach Jeff Vizenor. Vizenor is 70-124-22 overall at MSU.

MARTIN'S MILESTONE MARK: Considering sophomore goaltender Kim Martin nabbed almost everything that Minnesota could put on her net last weekend, it seems only fitting she would grab the WCHA's Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season.

The native of Stockholm, Sweden, shattered UMD's previous record for saves in a game when she kept the Bulldog net empty by turning away 50 shots on goal, including a penalty shot, against the Gophers last Saturday to earn the sixth shutout of her career.

Martin, who just recently returned from net-minding duties for Team Sweden at the Four Nations Cup two weeks ago, eclipsed the Bulldog record of 44 saves (set by Riitta Schaublin on March 9, 2007 against Mercyhurst College) after just two periods when she had tallied 45 stops in forty minutes of action. What made Martin's feat even more impressive was the fact that UMD played 12 minutes in the second stanza a man down, including a 5-on-3 that Martin and the Bulldog penalty kill units simply twarted. The clean sheet was Martin's third on the year.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY...AND OFTEN: UMD leads the nation with the most effective penalty-kill, despite conceding a power-play goal to Minnesota last Sunday. The Bulldogs have killed 66-of-70 infractions successfully for a 94.3% rate, and are averaging 15.4 minutes in the box an outing.

Four UMD players have logged 20 or more minutes in the penalty box, including three freshmen. Iya Gavrilova leads UMD with seven penalties totaling 25 minutes, while junior Myriam Trepanier has committed the most violations with 11 for 22 total minutes.

The Mavericks rank No. 7 in the country with their penalty kill unit, which is 50-of-56 for an 89.3 percentage rate, averaging 12 minutes a game a man down.

FROM NEAR AND FAR: The Mavericks sport the second most players from across the Atlantic Ocean in the WCHA after UMD. MSU has two rostered players from Sweden and one from Finland, while the Bulldogs list two from Sweden, two from Finland, and one from Russia.

WELCOME ADDITIONS: UMD added two early signees last week, including Kacy Ambroz of New Prague, Minn. and Lana Steck of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Ambroz tallied 46 goals and 36 as a junior forward last season for New Prague High School, and has tallied 297 points in her high school career so far. She was named an honorable mention All-State last season, as well as to the All-Metro Third Team,

Steck, who orginally signed with the Bulldogs for this season before an injury sidelined her for the year, was a goaltender for Team Mnitoba in the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

BULLDOG NOTES: Senior captain Karine Demeule will be sidelined this weekend due to a foot injury sustained Sunday prior to the afternoon contest...Sophomore Saara Tuominen continues to lead UMD with 17 points (6-11=17), which ranks her No. 16 nationally...Three other players have amassed eleven or more points 12 games into the season, including Tuominen's linemates freshman Iya Gavrilova (4-8=12) and sophomore Elin Holmlov (4-7=11), as well as freshman Haley Irwin, who checks in with 11 (4-7=11)...Irwin has tallied the fifth most points per game in the country for a rookie with a contest average of 1.10 PPG...Kim Martin ranks No. 2 in the nation with a .955 save percentage...Martin has made a total of 275 saves while allowing just 13 goals...11 of the 13 goals that have found the net against Martin were scored by Minnesota in just three games this season...Junior defenseman Myriam Trepanier's game-winning goal in last Saturday's skate landed her in the 7th slot all-time among UMD defensive scorers with 24 career points (10-14=24).

MAVERICK NOTES: Sophomore Kala Buaganski is on a four-game scoring streak with a goal in each game and a total of six points...Seven MSU players earned at least two points in the home sweep of Ohio State on Nov. 9-10...Three players lead the Mavericks in scoring with seven points, including senior Kristine Bunker (5-2=7), junior Maggie Fisher (4-3=7), and Buaganski (4-3=7)...MSU's power-play ranks 23rd in the country, with the Mavericks only having scored seven goals in 54 man Students from local schools give their version on how to cook turkey to creating pastries of choice

(Editor's note: Third grade students from local schools were asked recently "How to make a Thanksgiving meal." The following are their unedited responses. Names may contain spelling errors as well, but we made our best attempt at reading the lists!)

To make a Thanksgiving meal, first, of course, you need a turkey! So, if you're a boy, you'd probably want to go hunting. You bring back the turkey and have your wife cook it. You also need dressing. I've never been to a Thnksgiving meal without dressing and beets. You need beets. Bees are dlicious. Then, there's green bean casserole. That's delicious, too! You might want some ham. And you can add to all that aything you want. But don't come crying to me when you don't have a turkey! Maybe invite some people over and your all set for a delicious Thanksgiving meal!!!

Well, first you go to Food King and get yourself a turkey. Then grab at least 3 ears of corn. You will need potato salad. If you have a grandpa who likes fishing then you are in for a treat. Catfish is one of the best things for a great thanksgiving meal. But that's not all you, will need. You will need much, much more! Chicken chicken chicken chicken. Yes that is another thing to get, think about, and let your taste buds fly to heaven when you get the teeth into the juicy chicken! Don't forget about pumkin pie. One thing about pumkin pie is you don't want to choke on the seeds. Make sure all the seeds are out of the pumkin before cooking. Now add stuffing to you huge meal. Make room for Aunt Norra or Papa Charlie. Now you have a great thanksgiving meal!

How to make a Thanksgiving meal it's really easy. First cut out some turkey pichures. Then write everyones name on them. Next take a nice table cloth and some fancy silverwear and plates. Finally place the name tags around the plates. Finally! the table is set. Now lets move onto the food. Now we all now that your going to have a turkey. Make shureyou buy a nice big juicy one. Then you cook some carrots and mashed potatoes. Next I really like to call it the fruit good plate. Which is all the fruit you could ever think of like strawberrys, cut up apples, mango, blackberrys, blueberrys, and even pinapple. Olso you just top it of will so wipe cream or fruit dip or maybe even cream cheese. Now thats what I call a Thanksgiving meal!

I would get the turkey and put two sticks in it. Wait till the cooker to warm up. Then you put the turkey in the cooker. After about 30 min. to an hour you check the heat of the turkey and if it's 75 degries or more it is done. Now how to mash pattatoes is you get 5 or more pattatoes. Then you boil them. Then you mash them with a cake mixer. With the green beans you pour about 3 cans of them in a boul. Then you heat them up in a mikerwave. Then you get 4 cansof corn and you heat them up in the mikerwave too. That is how you make a thanksgiving dinner.

The first thing you do is buy a Butterball better known as a turkey. Then you have to get the table ready. Then you have to put the butterball in the oven for about 50 minuts. Then you have to get chicken wings, roles, mashed patatoes, gravy. Then you have to get alot of drinks like orange crush grapet Dr. Pepper. Then you have to get the butterball out of the oven. Then lay it out on the thanksgiving table. Then you got to get something to put the drinks in a good glass. Then yoo have to get some plates. Then you put all that yommy delicous food on the good table.

How you make a Thanksgiving meal is... well of course you invite friends or relatives. Then after you invite people you set up a table. After that you get goin the kitchen. Get all the supplies you need and get cookin! Now for the food, I would enjoy some turkey, well maybe some other stuff to like beans, ham, toast and other stuff. But on my last Thanksgiving I had these green beans with bacon and brown sugar and it was rockin! Anyway, were past food, what you have to do now is get plenty of silverware and put it on your table inside or out just in time for your visitors. When they get there lets hope they like it. But Thanksgiving isn't about the food its about spending time with eachother.

How to make a Thanksgiving dinner is first you get turky. Then thaw it out. But not to long. Third you get the the turky after you thaw it. You put it in the oven and let it cook. While it's cooking set the table. When it's cookedtake it out of the oven and set it on the table. But be careful becaus it might by realy hot. Once you do that you can get mac & cheese. Even put velveta on it. Then set it on the stove and let it cook for a few minutes. Then set it on the table. If you want, you can even cook ham. Make drinks like tea, coke, dr.pepper, root beer, lemoade, even coolade. Make even pumpkin pie. Pumpkin Pie is my favorite. Get corn. Open, the can, and put it in a pan. Let it cook in the microwave. Then get mash patatoes. ut it in a bowl. Put some water in the bowl. Put it in the microwave for about 25 or 45 minutes. Take that out and put it on the table. To me okra, is realy good, to have for Thanksgiving. First you get the okra. Then you put it in a pot and let it boil. After it on the table. Get your family and sit at the table. But don't eat yet. First you have to pray. Let other people say their prayer before you eat if you finish your prayer before everybody else. Say a good prayer to od thanking him for the food. And don't rush when you pray just to eat first. After yall pray yall can eat all of the food you want.

You wanna know how to make a Thanksgiving meal? Well here it is! When your about to cook your turkey remember to put pineapple juice in it first. It makes the taste alot better. Remember to make alot of food to celebrate the special occasion. Always lay out some snacks to eat while your still cooking. Make sure the food is never burnt or else somebody will complain about it. Make sure the drinks are always cold so that the other people will eat more of the food. Make sure that the turkey is done last so people will stay at your house. Never cook anything to fancy or else it'll taste bad. Tell people to bring more food so you can see what dish tastes the best. I've given ou the advise. Now you do it!

If you want to make a great Thanksgiving meal, you should listen. Get you hunting stuff, because were going to kill some turkey. Once you see a good plump turkey, you kill it you take it back to your house. Then you pluck all the feathers. Then you put some butter all around it, wrap it in a big plastic bag, and put it in the oven. Let it cook for about an hour and a half. When it is done, you can start to cook the sides suchas, mashed potatoes, green beans, and stuffing. As im sure you know all you half to do to cook mashed potatoes is buy or if you have grown potatoes harvest them. You wash then skin them. You put them in a hot pot and beat them with a beater. Don't forget to put butter in with them. And now to make the alway delicious green beans! Once again you can buy or if you grow them harvest them. Now you get a pot and boil some water. Put the green beans in and to add some extra great taste, boil some bacon in with them. Oh! I was about to forget the stuffing! Well to make it you need cook cornbread an mash it up. Then your tea, all you need to do is put packets in water and wait. Then your meal.

My mom and dad useally make pie's. My dad makes a sweet potato pie and my mom makes a pumpkin pie. When we go over there my grandma shows us were to sit. Then my sister, mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, and me eat a big feast. I eat the turkey, mashed potatos, corn, and bread. My sister eats everything like everybody but me. I like desert the best I get two pieces of chocolate and pumpkin. After, we help clean up then all the adults talk for a while and my sister and I watch T.V. Then we say goodbye and get in our car to go home. When we get home we go to bed. The End.

My way to make a Thanksgiving meal is to start with the turkey because it's the heavest. Our turkey wieght about 97lbs. Now first you take the turkey and stuff in it you can use what ever Thanksgiving food you can use dressing cranberry sause chicken all kinds of that stuff. after that get seacening or any other kinds of spice and dash the seacening on the tukey. Now it's time to go to the chicken you can buy it roatistory or just make it your way. Then when you get done with that you go to the dressing you can make it your way. So it's time to eat the meal with the family.

Kendell Moore

This is how I make my Thanksgiving meal. First my mom has to buy all the stuff then were ready to cook. First she puts the am and turkey into the oven. then she starts to do the mashed potatos, corn, green beans, and corn bread. So she does all that then she makes salad and dressing. (But I don't eat the dressing) She also makes sweet potatos and she puts fruit on this platter where you can put fruit dip stuff and fruit. It's really good. Now it's almost time for the turkey and ham to be done. Now sense she's got the mashed potatos, corn, green beans, corn bread, salad, dressing, sweet potatos, and fruit and fruit dip done the turkey and ham are done and here comes my cousins, aunts, and uncles. It's time to have a feast with my wonderful family. Yum. It's all so delicious. then we thank God for are food. Thanksgiving is awesome. Happy Thanksgiving!

Meredith

My idea of making a Thanksgiving meal is going hunting for turkey. If you see one you shoot it take it to your house. Then you cook it at your house and then you eat it at dinner and it saticfies your tummy emm emm. But if you don't see a turkey when you are hunting you should go to a grocery store and buy a turkey. Then after that you do the same thing you go home and cook it. Still emm emm. Then there is one more thing you can do. Stuff it and if you want you can eat mashed potatoes and that is my idea of a Thanksgiving meal.

Set empty place at table

Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo Print Single page view Reprints Post Comment Text size: At first glance, it seems as though our world is imploding this year. Many of us have been affected by the plummeting housing values and the skyrocketing gasoline prices. Many Americans have lost loved ones in the war on Iraq or know someone who has, and our troops are still in Iraq and Afghanistan. We've witnessed unimaginable losses, including the fires in California, tornadoes in the Midwest and the recent cyclone in Bangladesh.

In light of all of this, it's especially important to keep the chaos in perspective and take a moment to be thankful for our blessings. As a sign of appreciation for all of our gifts and privileges, our family tradition at Thanksgiving is to leave an empty place at our dinner table. It reminds us of our loved ones who are no longer with us except in our hearts. It symbolizes the children who never made it into the world and those people who are less fortunate than us: those who do not have homes, who have no food to eat, or do not enjoy the privilege of religious freedom or freedom of speech. It is also a symbol of our wish for peace in the world.

At Thanksgiving, and every day, we should take a moment to recognize, appreciate and cherish all of our many blessings. Set an empty place at your Thanksgiving table to remember and to recognize what really matters: family, friends and freedom.
